Why People Use a Word Counter
You're writing an essay and the assignment says "800-1000 words." You're three paragraphs in and have no idea where you stand. Sound familiar? That's why word counters exist.
This tool counts your words as you type. Paste your text in the box above and you'll see the word count, character count, sentence count and paragraph count update in real time. No need to save anything, upload a file or create an account.
Everything runs right here in your browser. Your text never gets sent to a server. Nobody reads it. Nobody stores it.
AI Help Inside The Editor
Counting is only the first step for many drafts. After you check the length, you can use AI Grammar or AI Assist to fix mistakes, shorten a long section, summarize the text or change the tone. The counter still runs in your browser. AI actions only send text when you choose to use them.
Who Needs This?
Pretty much anyone who writes. Students check if their papers hit the minimum word count. Bloggers track article length so a draft has enough room to answer the topic well. Social media managers count characters to stay under platform limits. Freelance writers bill by the word, so accurate counts matter.
Translators use word counts for project quotes. Teachers verify student submissions. SEO specialists check content length against competing pages. If you work with text in any capacity, you'll use a word counter more often than you think.
How Word Counting Actually Works
A word is any sequence of characters separated by spaces. The sentence "Hello world" has two words. Simple enough, right? Not always.
Hyphenated words cause the most confusion. Is "well-known" one word or two? Different tools handle this differently. Most word processors count it as one. Some online tools count it as two. If you're close to a word limit, this matters.
Numbers, URLs and email addresses also get counted differently depending on the tool. Our counter treats each space-separated chunk as one word, which matches how most academic institutions count.
Words Per Page
A standard page with 12pt font, double spacing and 1-inch margins holds about 250 words. Single-spaced, that goes up to around 500. A typical book page runs 250-300 words depending on trim size and font choice.
Quick reference: a 1,000-word essay fills roughly 4 double-spaced pages or 2 single-spaced pages. A 5,000-word article runs about 20 double-spaced pages.
Reading Time Estimates
The average adult reads about 238 words per minute when reading non-fiction. Fiction tends to go a bit faster, around 260 WPM. So a 1,000-word blog post takes roughly 4 minutes to read.
Reading time labels are now common on blog posts because they help readers decide what to open. If you run a blog, a simple estimate sets expectations before someone starts reading.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do different word counters give different results?
There's no universal standard for what counts as a "word." Some tools count hyphenated terms like "well-known" as one word. Others count them as two. Numbers, URLs and special characters get handled differently too. If you're submitting work with a strict limit, use the same counter your instructor or publisher uses.
Is this better than the word count in Google Docs or Microsoft Word?
For a basic word count, they do the same thing. The difference is that this tool also shows you reading time, keyword density, sentence length and readability data in one place. If all you need is a quick number, your word processor works fine. If you want the full picture, an online tool gives you more.
Is my text safe? Do you store what I paste?
No. Standard tools run in your browser, so your text never leaves your device. AI features like grammar checking, summarizing, humanizing, email writing, essay drafting and resume building need to send text to an API for processing. We do not store those submissions after the result is returned.
Do the AI features run automatically?
No. The word counter works instantly in your browser. AI features only run when you click an AI button, such as Grammar or AI Assist. That way you can count private text without sending it to an AI service.
How many words fit on a page?
About 250 words on a standard double-spaced page with 12pt font and 1-inch margins. Single-spaced, it's closer to 500. Published book pages vary from 250 to 350 depending on the format.
How long does it take to read 1,000 words?
About 4 minutes at the average adult reading speed of 238 words per minute. Technical material takes longer because people slow down to absorb unfamiliar concepts. Light fiction goes faster.
Does the word count include headers and footnotes?
This tool counts everything you paste into the text area. If you copy headers, footnotes or captions along with your main text, they'll be included. For academic papers, check your institution's guidelines on what to include in the official count.
